I also struggled with these same challenges. I had so much confusion about how I should be parenting my adoptive children and felt totally exhausted.
I tried traditional parenting approaches and quickly discovered these made things worse:
-
reward charts
-
expecting my child to act like their chronological age
-
focusing only on behavior management.
I read every adoptive parenting book I could get my hands on and tried so hard to do it all right. Sometimes things like “time-ins” worked but sometimes they didn’t. Many times I knew what the right thing to do was but just couldn’t find it within myself to actually do it.
Eventually a health crisis forced me to prioritize self-care. As I began making changes in myself, I was no longer trying to pour from an empty cup, and my parenting toolbox started to expand. I had more space to get curious about my children’s behavior. I had more capacity to respond mindfully rather than just react to behaviors.
My personal experience of being an adoptive parent for 11 years has given me valuable insights into the journey. As a certified health coach with a background in Recreational Therapy I can offer a variety of tools and resources to help with building connections and providing stress resilience for overwhelmed moms.
My approach is to help you stay centered during big behaviors and cultivate a deeper sense of connection to your child without feeling totally drained.
